Twelve Days of Christmas: Four Calling Birds

I’m continuing the 12 Days of Christmas series today with Four Calling Birds.

I had to do my research on this one! I really had no idea what a calling bird even was! Apparently, in 1780, when the song was written, the words were slightly different. It actually said colly birds instead of calling birds. Colly birds referred to blackbirds in the song. So, there’s your history lesson!

I overlapped two handprints for the large bird (with thumbs overlapping and pointing up). Then, I painted a circle for the head and extended the tail. We used thumb prints for the other birds. Here’s our creation:

The Twelve Days of Christmas Footprints and Handprints

Days 1-3
Four Calling Birds
Five Golden Rings
Six Geese A Laying
Seven Swans a Swimming
Eight Maids a Milking
Nine Ladies Dancing
Ten Lords a Leaping
