Potty training has been in full force around our house. We’ve had very few accidents, but last week my daughter had a huge accident while playing on our bed. We have waterproof mattress protectors on the kids beds, but not on ours in the master bedroom. Maybe I should be ordering one?! I was worried that we wouldn’t get the smell out, but we did! In this post I’ll give you the secret to remove urine smell from a mattress.

Since we’d be sleeping on the mattress that night, I wanted to make sure that I wasn’t using any cleaning products with harsh chemicals to get the smell out. But, I wanted something that was really effective, because I definitely didn’t want the lingering odor of urine in my bedroom.

How to Remove Urine Smell from a Mattress

I’m going to tell you how I removed the urine smell from our mattress. I use this same process to treat spots on carpet or upholstery as well. The most important part of the process is time. You want to take care of this smell right away. I’ve found that if you get to the smell quickly, it’ll be the least difficult to get rid of!

Immediately Soak Up as Much Urine as Possible with a Paper Towel
You want to soak up any wet excess. We have a pillow top mattress, so paper towels actually soaked up a lot right away.

Use a Spot Remover to Soak Up Even More
If you have a spot remover, use it to extract as much as possible. I used my spot remover without adding any water first.

Next, I suggest adding a little water to the area to continue the wet extraction process. Keep going until the water coming up is mostly clear instead of yellow.

If you have kids and don’t have a Spot Remover, I highly recommend getting one! I use it way more often than I care to admit! We have a Bissell SpotClean portable cleaner, and it works perfectly for small jobs like this one.

Apply EnviroKlenz Everyday Odor Eliminator
With how much time you spend on your mattress, choosing the right cleaning supplies is so important. You want to sleep on something that is non toxic, fragrance free and allergy friendly. That’s why you want to use green cleaning products for this step! You want to actually eliminate the odor rather than covering it up with another scent. I recommend Enviroklenz Odor Eliminator to get rid of the smell for good. EnviroKlenz products are made from natural earth minerals with no masking agents!

As with any new product, make sure to test the product in a small area first before applying it in large quantities.

I diluted the EnviroKlenz Everyday Odor Eliminator prior to use. They suggest one part EnrivoKlenz to four parts warm water. Luckily, I had a small, empty spray bottle on hand that I was able to re-purpose.

I sprayed a light layer over the affected area. The instructions say to leave it on the surface for 15 minutes.

Then, I used my spot cleaner to remove the product.

Keep the Air Moving While It Dries
Open windows and/or run a fan while your mattress is drying. It’ll help avoid a musty smell later!

  1. I love that this is a green product since we breathe in what’s in the mattress! This is good to know since pee on the bed is like a weekly thing over here.

  2. Yuck, luckily I have never had to deal with this issue! Sounds like you came up with an effective way to deal with it.

  3. There are not many smells worse than urine in a mattress. This product looks like a great way to get the smell out and I like that it’s natural.

  4. We finished potty training, but still have the occasional accident, so this is really helpful. My boys’ mattresses are plastic covered, but we also need a cover for our own bed. I also need one of those spot removers!
