I am A Seahorse Book and Craft

Today is the first day of Picture Book Month!  You can read more about this month-long celebration in my post here. Then head to your local library or Amazon.com and get your books!

Today’s theme is oceans, so we are reading “I am a Seahorse” by featured author Trisha Speed Shaskan.  It is a great non-fiction book about a seahorse.  She follows these tiny creatures through their lifecycle.  The illustrations are amazing!

I made up a cute seahorse craft to go with the story.  I started by printing this seahorse printable on blue paper.  Then, I cut out the inside of the seahorse, leaving an opening in the middle of the paper.  I also cut out strips of green paper.

I created a sticky surface with several pieces of packing tape laid out in rows, face up.

Then, I let my daughter place small squares of tissue paper on the tape.

Once the tape was mostly covered, we stuck it to the back of the seahorse picture.  I trimmed away the excess tape that was hanging past the edged of the paper.

We added an eye with a sharpie and my daughter glued on the green strips with a glue stick.
This craft also look adorable in a window!
