Fall Reading Fun

We’ve been doing a lot of reading around our house! My older kids just finished a Read-A-Thon fundraiser at school and I’m participating in the 21 Day challenge with our toddler. Books are definitely on our minds!

The Read-A-Thon

Our school uses it as their one fundraiser of the year. The students are asked to get sponsors for their reading and can earn rewards individually and as a class. The principal always puts out some crazy challenge. Last year, she read on a horse for the day. This year she read in a pool (actually a dunk tank) in 50 degree weather. Brrrr!

The 21 Day Challenge

This 21 day challenge urges parents to read aloud to their children for at least 15 minutes daily for 21 consecutive days. The idea is that this will start a positive reading habit for life! Reading aloud from birth plays a vital role in a child’s brain development, but only 15% of parents read aloud from birth.

Books We’re Reading

We’ve gotten a couple complimentary books this month that I’d like to share with you!

Astri the Brave L’il Oyster by Jessica Delagardelle
We loved this adorable book.

It has a great message about getting through a difficult change to find something new and beautiful. The story is very imaginative and is a great way to talk to your kids about having a growth mindset!

Wonder by R. J. Palacio

This book is a bestselling narrative about a 10-year-old with a facial deformity. He has been homeschooled, but enters public school for the first time. When he attends school, he must cope with new situations and people.

You’ll see a movie based on this book in theaters soon! It has some big talent including Julia Roberts, Owen Wilson, and Jacob Tremblay.
